The 'Na Aksa Gila Kyew Learning Center joined ABC Canada on Jan. 23, 2009, in the Team Canada national effort to top the Guinness World Record for the most children simultaneously reading with an adult in multiple locations.
Prior to that date, the record was held by Team USA with 78,791 participants. While the official Canadian count is not yet in, a total of 190,576 participants were registered with ABC Canada prior to Jan. 23. The official count for the world record is expected to to be released on Feb. 6.
The 'Na Aksa Gila Kyew event was held in the Kitsumkalum community hall and attracted 51 children and adult readers plus 15 witnesses.
Family Literacy Day is officially celebrated by families and communities across Canada on January 27 of each year.
